Dog’s First Encounter with Synthetic Grass

shutterstock_154785260I have been cooped up inside for a couple of days. First it was super wet. My owners call it rain. Then we had some weird digging and stuff going on outside today. I wanted to show my owner I could help, but he would not let me. I could not believe all of my favorite spots were being dug up and tossed away. I wanted so badly to play in the fresh dirt and re-mark all my spots. Instead I stuck my wet nose on the window and stared out at everything I have ever known be ripped apart.

My owner is getting older. I have been his constant companion for many years now. I remember being a fur ball tumbling around him inside and outside, and the first time I ever was given a rawhide from him. I was there when it was snowing and too hot for my panting to cool me down. I have watched him come and go with his weird metal rod bars that I think could be perfect for a game of fetch. The little balls he uses are too tough for my teeth these days though. I prefer the soft, flexible feel of my favorite tennis ball.

I do not know where he goes with the odd fetching bars and white hard balls. I have heard the terms “going golfing” in passing to my owner’s woman friend before, but I do not know what that is. The woman friend almost always makes a sound similar to I do when someone I do not like is in my territory. She must not like this thing “golf.”

Coming back to reality, wait a minute! There is new green stuff where all the dirt was. It looks different though. It almost looks like two different kinds of grass. How did they do that when they threw out all of my precious rolling grounds? One human is sprinkling something that looks like dirt on top of it, and another human is on the ground, almost rolling in it himself. He’s on all fours doing something all the new grass edges.

My owner just called out to me saying just a little bit longer. Is that a little big longer until I have to re-mark all my territory again? Does he even know how much work and how long that took for me to do? Guess I better strut over to the water bowl and fill up!

charlotte installOne of the humans just met my owner at the door and asked him to sign some paperwork. I could only hear parts of the conversation while I lapped at the water dish. I heard two distinct terms: “EnvyLawn” and “putting green.” What are all of these? My owner then responded that he thinks he, his wife and I will all enjoy the new artificial grass. Hold up. Did I just hear artificial grass? You mean I will not be able to roll in it and carry it indoors with me? Does this mean it will not preserve my marked territory? I start whimpering from panic.

My owner lets me outside to check out this new yard that almost looks the same as before. I cautiously paw the new grass. It feels…soft. It smells different, but it sure looks very similar. The only odd spot is the shorter grass area with a little hole in the ground with a little white flag. Hey owner! They missed a spot!

I would love to stay and chat about this new synthetic grass, but remember all that water I lapped earlier? I need to get busy and try re-marking all my favorite spots now. Woof!
